International Conference on Social Security Policy: Challenges
before India and South Asia

RIS, jointly with the World Bank Institute, Washington, DC, organised an "International Conference on Social Security Policy: Challenges before India and South Asia". in New Delhi on 1-3 November 1999. Shri K.C. Pant, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission and Chairman, RIS inaugurated the conference. About eighty eminent experts, including the officials of the World Bank, World Bank Institute, ILO, Asian Development Bank, and other agencies; and senior government officials, policy makers, academicians, and specialists from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Malaysia and Australia participated. The conference deliberated on various dimensions of the issues such as conceptual framework for social protection, reforming pension system, prevailing pension systems in South Asia, safety nets for the uncovered elderly poor, economic reforms and labour markets, and investing provident funds assets. From RIS, Dr. Nagesh Kumar presented a joint paper with Dr. V.R. Panchamukhi and Ram Upendra Das on "Economic Reforms and Labour Markets in South Asia".
