First Asian Conference on Biotechnology and Development
 
A two-day international conference on “Biotechnology and Development: Challenges and Opportunities for Asian Region” is being organised in New Delhi on February 26 and 27, 2002 by Research and Information System for the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (RIS), a New Delhi-based Think Tank in the field of development and cooperation. On this occasion a new journal called Asian Biotechnology and Development Review will also be launched. This new journal will come out thrice a year and shall be supported by UNESCO and Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

Shri K.C. Pant, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission and Chairman RIS will inaugurate the conference on Tuesday, February 26, 2002 at Hotel Kanishka, New Delhi. Dr. William G. Padolina, Deputy Director General, International Rice Research Institute, Manila, will deliver the keynote address on “Biotechnology, Innovation and Development”.

A large number of eminent experts from Bangladesh, Belgium, China, France, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, inter governmental international bodies, senior officials from various Indian government departments, and representatives from academic, business and industry circles of India shall present theme papers and take part in the proceedings of the conference. The programme of the conference include extensive discussions on a number of crucial issues like potential and challenges from biotechnology for developing countries; agricultural biotechnology in Malaysia, Thailand, etc.; biotechnology for pharmaceuticals and health; trade, IPR and regulatory issues; convergence of technologies and implications for economic development; financing of biotechnology; and learning from experiences.

The conference is also aimed at evolving an agenda for future research work programme in the field of biotechnology and to establish a network of research institutions working in this field.
