By RIS Research Team, 1989
RIS prepared this report as background document for the Ninth Summit of the Heads of State or Government of Non-Aligned Countries, held in Belgrade, 3-7 September 1989. In this report, RIS attempted to present the various aspects of the growing interdependence in the world economy. It urged the need for evolving new global strategies for achieving interdependent growth with equity between nations. The report contained two specific theme papers on the international technological order and on the basic needs approach to development. It called for an equitable technological order and an end to the exploitative tendencies that are emerging in the field of new technologies. In regard to the basic needs approach to development, the report stressed the importance of reshaping strategies so that satisfaction of basic needs receives the highest priority in the process of development.
